Product Description

The 75mm pack howitzer was developed in the 1920s but not mass produced until the outbreak of World War II. Under its original design, it could be broken down into six loads (plus 6 for ammo) each bearable by mule to otherwise inaccessible areas. The system was purposely engineered to be light, easily transportable and operated by a small crew of 9 men (which worked well in the favor of light divisions such as airborne units as evident in the M8 variant of the Pack). If mules were not available Marines could `strong back` the howitzer (4 or 5 Marines per 1 mule load). The high explosive shell of the M1 Pack Howitzer weighed 6.3 kilograms. The weapon system could be used for suppression, assault, defense and limited anti-tank duty. The `Pack` designation came about from the idea that pack animals could carry the lightweight system which was common in WW1.

In addition to service with mule units, the 75mm howitzer became the main gun for glider and parachute artillery battalions in WWII. Airborne units so equipped won honors at Bastogne, Normandy and Arnhem. The chief difference between pack howitzers for mule use and those for airborne operations were the wheels: the former had spoked wheels and the latter had metal wheels and pneumatic tires.

The M1A1 saw action in Arnhem with the British, being dropped by glider in Operation Market Garden. British troops also trained Yugoslavian partisans in the use of the weapon system. The M1A1 saw action in the far east jungles of the Pacific Theater. The ability of the system to be able to be broken down made it most advantageous in mounting amphibious assaults needing artillery support immediately upon landing on the beaches.
