Product Description
It was obvious that the Sherman main M3 gun was underpowered to engage enemy tanks. Plans were made to mount a larger gun, the 76mm M1A1 gun on M4A1’s and M4A3’s. However, this required a larger turret. The T23 turret was fitted with the 76mm gun and then placed on the M4A1 and M4A3 hulls using the same turret ring.
Unfortunately the 76mm was still unable to adequately penetrate frontal armor on the Panther and Tiger, unless using the very rare APCR ammunition. Most early M4A3 76mm still had the regular VVSS suspension, while all produced after August 1944 carried the HVSS suspension. Also know as the M4A3E8. That version coming soon.
