Product Description
The backbone of the German artillery forces throughout the war was the 15cm Field Howitzer designated sFH18. It was produced in parallel with the heavy 10cm Kanone which employed the same carriage but was distinguishable by its shorter barrel.
Both weapons were developed in the 1920`s and which entered service in 1933/4. However, the army became rapidly disillusioned with the 10 cm and focused on the 15cm which saw service throughout the war. The sFH 18 was seen in almost all film shot of the German army at war from the first to the last days of the conflict.
It was moved initially by horse but later was adapted to be towed by half-track. The performance of this type of gun was dependent on the charge and shell type. The standard HE shell when propelled by a single charge was some 4000 yards and when boosted to the maximum charge it was boosted to some 14,000 yds. In an attempt to increase the range further, it saw the introduction of the first tentative use of rocket assisted shells in 1941. It could only be used on weapons with muzzle brakes but could increase range to some 19,000 yards. It was not a success and was withdrawn quite quickly.
Its Achilles heel though was its inability to be moved quickly weighing in at over 5 1/2 tons. To try and correct this the gun was later mounted onto a Panzer 111/1V chassis and was known as the `Hummel` or Bumble Bee.
