Product Description
Although the 12 ton tractor manufactured by Daimler-Benz was strong enough to tow all known loads, development of the already constructed 18 tonne tractor was started in 1935 and designated as the Sd.Kfz.9 by the authorities, the first prototype appearing in 1936 and was capable of towing a load of 17.5 tonnes with a carrying capacity of 2.8 tonnes.
From its design it could be found in artillery, tank and assault gun units and saw service with the Army, Krugsmarine and Luftwaffe.
There were three main variants. The 9/1 was developed in 1940 with a 6 tonne crane manufactured by Bilston which was used as a mobile hoist in tank maintenance units. Used initially in tank repair shops it was later used in recovery units as well as towing bridge units on separate trailers.
The 9/2 was designed for heavy loads and was equipped with a 10 tonne petrol/Electric driven crane equipped with counterweights introduced in 1942 for tank repair shops. Leveling jacks had to be used and the chassis was widened and elongated and the number of tracks increased to 49.
The 9/6 was equipped with a 40 tonne tractive power winch but it was not possible to find any further information of its existence.
It was also attempted to convert the vehicle to a self propelled gun using the 88mm Flak 37 with an armoured cab only 14 of which were manufactured and no variant number was designated.
These vehicles were massive and although capable of dealing with tanks up to the Panzer IV could not handle the heavier Panzers or Tigers. As the SdKfz9 was the only recovery vehicle in use at the time the work around was to use two or more to retrieve and tow and disabled vehicle until the heavy Bergepanther appeared.
