Product Description
This is a standalone figure of a titanothere, designed to be similar to the genus Megacerops, an actual pleistocene relative of the rhinoceros that is now extinct. The creature was endemic to North America during the Late Eocene epoch, and existed as a genus within the family Brontotheriidae for approximately four million years. The creature presented is likely a male, as females had smaller horns on their noses.
The horns are believed to have been used to fight each other, possibly due to territorial or mating reasons. This is evidenced by the skeleton of an adult male which was discovered with partially healed rib fractures that match the injuries which would be caused by being struck by another such creature with the horned snout, and since no known creature living at the same time and place could have inflicted such injuries.
Many remains have been found in the South Dakota and Nebraska areas of the US. Sioux indians found the remains of herds killed by volcanic activity and called them "thunder horses", in the belief that they ran across the clouds and caused thunderstorms.
While the actual colour of these creatures is unknown, I have based my interpretation on that of a modern day white rhinoceros.
(This interpretation is not guaranteed to match any specific skeleton.)
